Returning to Health After Surgery

Surgery can be a daunting experience. To avoid any stress or fear in the lead up to your procedure, it’s important that you understand what the procedure will involve. Some questions you can ask your physiotherapist and/or surgeon before your operation include:

Do I need to do anything to prepare for my surgery? Building up your strength before surgery an assist in your recovery after the operation.

For how long will I be in hospital?

What should I be doing post-surgery? Surgery is a big process for your body to undergo. But getting up and out of bed from day one can reduce your risk of post-operative problems. Many patients are encouraged to walk around the bed or ward following their surgery.

Will I need to use an aid? If you will require crutches after surgery, your physiotherapist can advise you beforehand on how to walk with them, so that you know what to expect.

When can I return to normal activity? We suggest seeing a physiotherapist post-surgery to help you return to your previous level of activity and function. Our physios can discuss with you the time frame you can expect for your surgery. Undergoing rehabilitation after surgery can improve your level of functional activity, enabling you to recover effectively within a shorter period of time.
