A contraindication is a condition or factor that serves as a reason to with-hold a particular treatment. Although there are benefits to Shockwave there are also risks or contraindications to treatment. These include treating:

  • Air filled tissue: lung, gut, heart
  • Pre-ruptured tendons (directly over this site)
  • Pregnant Women
  • Patients under the age of 18 (except Osgood Schlatter and muscle spacticity)
  • Bleeding disorders or taking oral anti-coagulants
  • Tissue with local tumors, bacterial and/or viral infections
  • Over local cortisone injections (within a 3 month period)

You should expect to feel pain during the treatment. You may also experience reddening, numbness and swelling of the skin over the treatment area. Having a moderate amount of pain during treatment is essential to attaining an optimal treatment response.

The number of treatment sessions can vary depending on the injury and the patient. Generally you can expect between 3-5 treatment sessions to achieve a positive result.

Treatment is conducted once a week.

It is expected you will feel temporary pain and discomfort after treatment.

There are no restrictions following the treatment. But always discuss with your physiotherapist your normal activity restrictions based on the particular stage of recovery of your condition.
