Importance of Fitness for Older People

Fitness for older people is important as they are more prone to heart disease, obesity, falling and mental illness. Scientific research has found that lack of physical activity increases your risk of developing diabetes, stroke and dementia. Falling is a high risk for the older age group but staying active is the number one way to prevent falls and improve balance.

Keeping fit at an older age

People over the age of 65 spend an average of 10 hours per day either lying down or sitting. As we age, it is important that we try to keep active. Physical activity is not only good for our health, but it can also ensure that we remain physically independent. The longer you stay independent, the longer you can enjoy playing with the grandchildren and having an active social life.

While many conditions related to aging are inevitable, there is an abundance of research showing that keeping active physically, socially and mentally can help the elderly maintain a healthy body, mind and spirit.

It’s also never too late to start living an active life. As little as 30 minutes of physical activity per day is enough to bring about major health improvements – especially for those who are normally sedentary. Physical activity is both beneficial and safe for those living with osteoporosis, arthritis and other chronic bone and joint conditions. Exercise can also benefit those who have had surgery or have suffered a stroke. It can offset muscle atrophy as well as prevent further health complications.
