Symptoms
If you experience the following in the thumb, middle fingers, index fingers, half of the ring fingers and/or the palm, this may be an indication of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome:
- Pain
- Tingling
- Numbness
- Pins and needles
- Numbness
- Weakness in the hand
- Pain extending to the shoulder or arm
- Worsening of symptoms at night
Some medical conditions can increase your chances of developing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. These conditions include:
- High blood pressure
- Thyroid dysfunction
- Diabetes
- Trauma to the wrist (e.g., fractures)
- Autoimmune disorders (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis)
- Fluid retention from pregnancy or menopause
Physiotherapy treatment
Depending on the severity of your condition, physiotherapy can be beneficial in the treatment of this condition. Your physiotherapy treatment may involve some of the following:
- Mobilisation and massage of wrist bones and soft tissues
- Adjustment of posture, ergonomics and sleeping position
- Application of a night splint to keep the wrist in a neutral position to improve wrist posture
- Tendon exercises to mobilise tendons in the carpal tunnel
- Nerve gliding exercises for the arm
- Advice on pacing activities
Those experiencing mild to moderate symptoms may be effectively treated with physiotherapy. Your physiotherapy-based treatment will be carried out with the goals of improving functional gains and reducing symptoms. Your physiotherapy will give you advice on how you can modify your activity and workplace ergonomics to not only improve your condition, but to also prevent symptoms from coming back.
