ANDREW HUGHES

Principal Physiotherapist/Olympic Physiotherapist & APA Sports & Exercise Physiotherapist | Liverpool

With over 28 years of Professional Physiotherapy experience, Andrew Hughes was amongst the first group of Physiotherapists to attain the title “Sports Physiotherapist” in Australia. In 1992, Andrew became the founding Director and owner of Sports Focus Physiotherapy through their first practice in Liverpool, NSW. He still treats patients at our Liverpool Physiotherapy location as well as Wynyard Physiotherapy. Andrew has had numerous team appointments throughout his distinguished career, including The Australian Men’s Volleyball Team, Football Federation Australia (FFA), Australian Beach Socceroos Team, NSW Cricket Team, NSW Hockey team, NSW Soccer Team, NSL soccer champions – Marconi Stallions and consultant appointments to Australian Triathlon and the NSW Institute of Sport. Andrew is currently Team Physiotherapist for the Hakoah, Sydney City East Football Club in the NSW Premier League 1. Andrew has been appointed as a Sports Physiotherapist to numerous Australian Teams competing at major world sporting events including the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, 1995 World University Games, numerous World Volleyball Championships and World Cups, 2013 and 2017 Maccabiah Games. Andrew lectures nationally and internationally on Sports Medicine related topics and is a successful inventor of Orthopaedic Bracing Technologies. Outside of work, Andrew continues to be a Sports Tragic but enjoys spending adventurous time with his 3 boys as well as playing guitar and competing in Masters Soccer events.

STEVEN NAYLOR

Steve graduated from the University of Sydney in 1994 and prior to that completed a Science degree at the University of Newcastle. Steve has worked as a physiotherapist for over 23 years. After first working in the public health system Steve moved into private practice at Sports Focus Physiotherapy Liverpool in 1996. He is now located at our Castle Hill Physiotherapy and Mt Pritchard Physiotherapy locations. Steve has worked with many elite sports teams and sportspersons over the years ranging from local to national, including Penrith Panthers Rugby League, Mounties Rugby League, Michael Wendon Swimming and the NSW Open Water Swim Team, Netball NSW, Hockey NSW and The Australian Men’s and Women’s Volleyball Teams.Steve has special interests in golf related injuries and biomechanics, and is an accredited TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) Specialist. Steve is a consultant Physiotherapist for Hockey NSW and looks after the NSW Mens AHL Team.On weekends Steve loves to cycle with friends and regularly participate in charity rides such as the MS Sydney to Wollongong ride. He is Head Physiotherapist for Mounties Rugby League. Steve provides a musculoskeletal screening service and Pre-Pointe Assessment for dancers, and has a special interest in treating spinal and pelvic conditions and uses Muscle Energy Techniques. Steve is qualified to perform dry needling and is a preferred provider for New South Wales Institute of Sport, Australia Post and Wesfarmers.He was named as Physiotherapist for the NSW Swifts Netball Team on the 1st November 2017 for the 2018 season commencing on the 29th April 2018.  Sports Focus Physiotherapy is also providing a sponsorship to the NSW Swifts.

BENJAMIN SIU

Principal Physiotherapist | Northbridge

Ben has been a physiotherapist for over 20 years and has worked with elite winter snow sport athletes over this period whom he loves helping prepare to achieve their goals in skiing and snowboarding. Ben has been a NSW Institute of Sport preferred service provider 2000-19, Australian Paralympic Team Physiotherapist 1997-2004 and is a National Alpine Classifier with the Australian Paralympic Committee. He is an International Para Alpine and Para Snowboarder Classifier. Ben has also been an Olympic Winter Institute Australia physiotherapist. Ben is located at our Northbridge Physiotherapy and Willoughby Physiotherapy locations. In addition to his love for snow sports, Ben loves diagnosing running injuries and picking apart running styles. He particularly enjoys the personal side of physiotherapy – “I love that I get to learn something from all my patients. Everyone is an expert at something and I am inquisitive and full of questions.” When not hitting the slopes himself in his spare time, Ben is also an avid rugby fan, supporting the Waratahs and attending games at every opportunity.

MATTHEW GRANT-SMITH

Matthew graduated from the University of Sydney in 2015 with a Master of Physiotherapy and a Bachelor of Health Science (majoring in movement sciences). His interest in physiotherapy emerged while assessing human movement, investigating muscle imbalances, and diagnosing acute injuries. Matt is passionate about transitioning his clients from painful injuries into robust rehabilitation programs and getting them back doing the things they love. Matt is currently working with Football Australia with the U17s Joeys National football team. Prior to this he was working with “Future Matildas” squad and the U20s Young Matildas national team culminating in the Costa Rica 2022 Youth World Cup. He has been the team physio for the Sydney Blue Sox in the Australian Baseball League, and various teams in the National Premier League such Marconi Stallions, North Shore Mariners, Mounties Wanderers and Hakoah FC. He has also involved with Norths Rugby in the Shute Shield and various other schools such as St Joseph’s College and Sydney Grammar School. Since graduating Matt has commenced his Master of Sports and Exercise Physiotherapy to become a specialist sports physiotherapist. He has completed various other qualifications such as the NeckSafe spinal safety program and ASCA strength and conditioning qualification. Matt has experience in adjunct therapies such as dry needling, fibreglass fracture casts and a new interesting addition to his clinical work is the use of blood flow restriction or blood occlusion training – get in contact to see how this device may assist your return to sport.

CRAIG MILSON

Craig graduated from the University of Sydney in 1994 and has over 26 years’ experience as a physiotherapist. Craig worked in the public health system and then overseas before returning to Australia and starting in private practice. Craig has a great deal of experience in dealing with sporting injuries, orthopaedic conditions and work based injuries. He has an interest in running, pain management, headache management, chronic pain, golf related injuries and biomechanical disorders and is qualified to perform dry needling. Craig is located at our Castle Hill Physiotherapy location. Craig has been involved in the management of players of many sporting teams including NSW Swifts,  Baulkham Hills Netball Association, Baulkham Hill Cricket and Blacktown Softball Associations. He enjoys the social interaction involved with physiotherapy and the satisfaction with helping clients. He enjoys all sports but particularly golf and baseball. Not only is Craig a keen sportsman himself, he has also owned and operated his own practice in the past so understands the pressure involved in getting athletes and workers ready for a smooth and efficient return to sport or work.

AARON D’SOUZA

Growing up with a passion for all things sport drove Aaron to pursue a career in helping people to achieve their physical goals both on the sporting field and in everyday life. Aaron graduated with a Bachelor of Exercise Physiology from the University of New South Wales in 2012 and a Masters of Physiotherapy from the University of Sydney in 2014. Aaron works at out Mount Pritchard Physiotherapy practice where he has a special interest in the treatment of the neck, lower back, knee and ankle injuries. Aaron also works in the orthopaedic Ward at Sydney South West Private hospital where he often treats patients post knee and shoulder surgery, hip and knee replacements. As a physiotherapist Aaron has had the chance to work with a number of sporting teams including Marconi Stallions FC, NSW Hockey and Australian Touch Football.

DANIEL CHIOVITTI

Daniel graduated as a titled Sports Physiotherapist in 2016 and has over 14 years experience in both the public and private sectors. He started with Sports Focus Physiotherapy at our Liverpool practice in 2008. He now treats clients at our Macarthur practice as a senior physiotherapist. He has a wealth of experience from the varied case load he has managed over the years and has further clinical qualifications in dry needling, kinesio taping. He also has experiece in cycling assessment, running biomechanics, lumbopelvic, hip and ankle conditions, He is also qualified to run ‘Bounce Back’ classes which focus on core stability training for lower back, neck and shoulder conditions. Daniel has a keen interest in sports and has worked with multiple national premier league teams including Marconi FC, Bonnyrigg White Eagles, Bankstown CIty FC and Mounties Wanderers FC. Daniel was previously the Head Physiotherapist to the Paralympic U19’s Young Pararoos in 7-a-side football at the 2015 World Games. He is is currently the Head Physiotherapist for the NSW Cerebral Palsy Football squad. Daniel loves playing footsal, travelling, cooking, photography and is a serious foodie!

VIVIAN YUNG

Vivian Yung graduated from the University of Sydney with first class honours in 2010. She has worked in the Royal North Shore Hospital’s outpatient and orthopaedic departments and private practices before joining Sports Focus Physiotherapy in 2012.   Vivian has undertaken further studies with the Australian Physiotherapy Association in the area of Women's Pelvic Health and is currently completing a Masters degree in Pelvic Health with the University of Melbourne.  She is using this advancement in her knowledge to supplement her Pilates rehabilitation and exercise to help women through pregnancy aches and pains and post-natal recovery. She also has a special interest in the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions, in particular neck and back pain, running and gait analysis.  Her evidence-based physiotherapy research led her to her honours research on low back pain and patient satisfaction.  In 2011, she presented her research paper at the International Congress of the World Confederation for Physical Therapy in Amsterdam. Outside of work, Vivian enjoys time with her young family, going outdoors, camping and playing sports.  She represented Australia in four World Kendo Championships, achieving 3rd place in team event in 2018 and a top 16 individual result in 2009 and 2012. She was also a NSW state representative in table tennis and was invited to compete at the Sydney 2000 Olympic selection trial.

SETH HIRSCHOWITZ

Seth is an experienced clinician with postgraduate qualifications who prides himself in looking after his clients like he looks after his own family. Seth draws on more than 30 years of clinical experience to optimise injury management so that best possible outcomes for clients, employees and managers is ensured. Since graduating with a BSc Physiotherapy, BSc Medicine (Hons) Exercise Science and Grad dip in manipulative Physiotherapy, Seth has worked as a physiotherapist in a variety of clinical settings including international level sporting team coverage, private musculoskeletal clinics, hospitals and also consulting to a number of large corporate companies assisting in both occupational health and wellbeing treatments as well as Aged Care Physiotherapy consultancy. Seth has headed up a number of practices internationally and has been based in Sydney for the past 25 years. He has recently joined the Sports Focus team after working extensively in private practice and aged care consultancy. Seth has a keen interest in working proactively with clients to identify potential predisposing factors for injury. Whether this be found in the workplace, or on the sporting field he is able to provide the added benefit of reducing the risk of further injury or its recurrence with a thorough skilled multifactorial approach. He provides the education and tools necessary to allow individuals to recover with speed and fortitude allowing them to be actively involved in their own rehabilitation goals. In his spare time Seth enjoys watching his boys play first grade soccer and also pursuing his passion for photography. LESA HOGAN

Lesa Hogan began at Sports Focus Physiotherapy Castle Hill soon after it opened in 2005. Lesa graduated from the University of Sydney in 1986 and has been a practicing Physiotherapist for 34 years working initially in the public system then combining travel and work in England for a few years before returning to begin working as a private practitioner in Sydney. She owned and operated her own practice in Guildford for 13 years and as part of this developed and a Movement Improvement program for dealing with chronic pelvis, back and neck pain which has fed into “Spine Care”  at our Castle Hill Physiotherapy location. Lesa also worked as a Clinical Supervisor with Sydney University and an “Enhanced Primary Care” lecturer at the University of Western Sydney. Her Spine Care at Castle Hill entails a functional core and spinal exercise and stretching regime individually tailored for each client’s needs. It follows a thorough hands on assessment and treatment consultation and has proven very successful in the management of many spinal conditions. She has also worked with many sporting teams over the years as Team Physiotherapist.

SACHA WHITE

After working in the health and fitness industry for many years predominantly as a clinical Pilates instructor, Sacha graduated from Macquarie University with the Doctor of Physiotherapy degree. She has a passion for women’s health and continues to focus on training in that area with the desire to help patients reach their goals and become the best version of themselves. Her qualifications in Pilates and fitness consist of a Diploma of Contemporary Pilates and Teaching Methodology, Certificate IV in Matwork Pilates, Certificate IV in fitness (Personal Training) and Certificate III in group fitness. In her free time Sacha enjoys Pilates and dance classes and loves spending time with family in the great outdoors.

KATE DEED

Kate graduated from the University of Sydney in 2001 with first class honours. She has worked in musculoskeletal physiotherapy since 2002 with extensive private practice experience in Sydney and London. Part of her practice experience involved working with national rugby league teams. Kate has a special clinical interest in spinal dysfunction (especially necks) as well as treating running injuries.  Kate often uses dry needling as well as some traditional acupuncture to compliment her very hands on  treatments. She is a firm believer that a physio’s manual therapy work is extremely valuable in a patients recovery.  In 2016 Kate completed her APPI Pilates for Physiotherapists training and enjoys using Pilates training to assist rehabilitating her patients.  She works part-time and is also full-time mum to 3 kids.  Her personal interests include a love of long distance running, snow-skiing and travelling.

Chris is experienced in all Physiotherapy treatable conditions and has special interest in sports related injuries, striving for excellent outcomes with optimal recovery times. He gained his Bachelor of Health Sciences from Sydney University graduating with a Masters of Physiotherapy. In addition, Chris has special interest in lower back and neck pain presentations and is passionate about getting the best outcome for his clients. He treats with a strong focus on manual therapy techniques in the rehabilitation process as the client builds toward independence and self-management in their treatment. Additionally, Chris has post graduate training in dry needling. Chris is an enthusiastic member of our Physio team and continues to work with Sydney Grammar Rugby and Basketball teams and previously with Marconi Stallions Football club. He skilfully designs rehabilitation programs as well as strength and conditioning programs for athletes and casual gym goers targeting effective and return to full function. In his own time, Chris enjoys a range of sports including Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Surfing, Running and lifting weights.

JAMES LAU

James Lau completed his Masters of Physiotherapy degree in 2013 at University of Sydney. He previously did his training in Toronto, Canada receiving a Bachelor & Honors in Science specialising in Neuroscience and Health Studies. He has done several courses after university such as fascial dry needling, functional movement assessment, and soft tissue mobilisation techniques. James is located at our Northbridge Physiotherapy & Pilates and Willoughby Physiotherapy locations. His passion lies in sports and he is one of the physiotherapists for the West Harbour Pirates Rugby Club where he assesses and treats on and off the field and provides a structured rehab program for the players He plans to further his training and knowledge in functional screening with SFMA (selective functional movement assessment) level 2 and FMS (functional movement screening) Level 1 and 2 in the near future. Although he misses the snow in Toronto and a proper white Christmas, he has settled into Sydney lifestyle and has adopted the Sydney Swans as his team to follow in replace of the Toronto Raptors.

TONY TRAN

Tony Tran has recently started working at Liverpool. He previously worked for a few years at the hospital but has now come on board at the practice on Wednesdays and Fridays. He is confident in manual therapy techniques and rehabilitating his patients, whether it be sporting injury-related, post-operatively or just everyday aches and pains. Rehab patients in the hospital straight after surgery can now come in and see Tony in the practice to aid recovery after surgery.

ANNA LEWIS

Anna has broad experience as a Defence Physiotherapist and in private practice, treating people with spinal and musculoskeletal injuries. Whether an injury is sustained in sport, recreation or a workplace, a rehabilitation program is essential to return to pre-injury activity. She is passionate about assisting people through their recovery with an exercise-based approach, in particular clinical Pilates and self-management exercise strategies.    Anna completed a research study as part of her Doctoral thesis utilising clinical Pilates exercises for chronic low back pain for Defence members. She has also completed another research study investigating exercise participation in adaptive sports programs for physical and mental health and wellbeing.     She has just completed her fourth Defence Rugby World Cup tour in France as the Defence men’s team physiotherapist.    Sports Focus enjoys Anna’s regular teaching our Saturday Pilates based Exercise Rehabilitation classes.

Gulfira completed her Bachelor of Health Science and Master of Physiotherapy at the University of Sydney in 2019. Gulfira has a strong interest in pre/post natal care, Incontinence and Women’s Pelvic Health. She is a member of the Australian Physiotherapy Association with ongoing professional development. She is also a member of the Women’s Health Training Associates which enables her to continue her women’s health training with the latest evidence based physiotherapy research. She has experience in geriatric rehabilitation and falls prevention programs. On her days off she likes to spend time with her twins and explore cafes.

FURQAN CHOWDHURY

Furqan graduated from the Australian Catholic University with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy (Honours). Furqan’s breadth of working experience in this space has enabled him to acquire a particular interest in orthopaedic post-operative rehabilitation and sporting-related injuries. In addition to his work at Sports Focus, Furqan is the resident physiotherapist for the under-20s and First Grade Mounties Wanderers Football Club (NPL1). Prior to this, Furqan worked at the Royal North Shore Hospital. During his time there, he gained valuable experience in the areas of orthopaedic post-operative care, casting, and the rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries. Furqan has also worked for a multitude of school and general sports teams in the specialised management of football and basketball injuries. He treats with a strong focus on exercise therapy to ensure that clients are empowered to continue pursuing the activities they enjoy despite injuries or pains they may suffer from. In his own time, you will likely find Furqan either playing pick-up basketball at the park or going for short hikes across Sydney. He bears a particular affinity for the Victoria Falls walking track.

MITCHELL CARTER

Mitchell graduated from the University of Technology with a Master of Physiotherapy and a Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Management. He had a passion for physiotherapy in particular Musculoskeletal physiotherapy ever since he was in school and competing in state-level Cross Country and Athletics events. Previously a learn-to-swim instructor, his goal is to help all patients with their injuries using the most up-to-date high-quality evidence. He loves working with paediatric patients and sports-related injuries. He loves manual therapy and exercise-based approaches to Physiotherapy. When not working, he has a passion for long-distance running, the gym and spending time with friends and family.

NIKKI BENNETT

Having graduated from Australian Catholic University with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy, Nikki is passionate about assisting her patients to reach their personal goals. This may be anything from an athlete keen to maximise their performance on field, to a grandparent wanting to play more easily with their grandkids. Nikki loves to work with her patients through education, exercise and manual therapy to help them achieve this. Before returning to Australia to study, Nikki loved to travel and has lived in several countries abroad. She spent her time teaching yoga or English as a second language. She has completed her clinical pilates training through the Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute and teaching classes to assist with clients rehabilitation. Her special areas of interest are sporting injuries, general musculoskeletal, falls prevention and back pain. Outside of work she loves exploring national parks, reading a good book, watching live music and eating great food.

Jess has recently moved to the Cronulla area and is joining us from another IHC company PHYZ X. Joining PHYZ X in 2015. Jess is driven, committed and open-minded to explore every avenue to help clients on their health journey. With the future of allied health delivery front of mind, Jess is not only always learning herself, but thrives in coordinating the professional futures of over 30 allied health students every year. With special interests in children, adolescents, disability, tendon injuries, dance performance and technology. Jess loves being able to help her clients set and then reach both their health and fitness goals, and enjoys being able to do this as part of a multidisciplinary team. In 2006, he completed his Masters of Chiropractic degree again at Macquarie University. Dr Tarek believes it is paramount to stay up to date with the latest research and techniques, and has undertaken numerous seminars in sports medicine, dry needling, rehabilitation and paediatrics. Dr Tarek has added a Diploma in Chiropractic Paediatrics to his qualifications in 2018. As well as recently completing courses in Kinesiology and Hijama to add to his repertoire of treatment options. Treating paediatrics is a passion of Dr Tareks and seeing the amazing results is what continually drives him to come to work each and every single day. Away from caring for patients, you’ll find Dr Tarek spending time with his lovely wife and three children. He also enjoys cycling, playing golf, oz tag and attending regular seminars.

With a background in professional soccer, Chuck pursued a career in chiropractic after suffering sporting injuries and seeking chiropractic care to recover and improve his sporting performance. Chuck is a member of the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia and Sport Medicine Australia, he has attended seminars in Gonstead and Diversified. Outside of practice, Chuck enjoys playing soccer, swimming, and working out at the gym. Chuck grew up in Hong Kong and moved to Australia during his teens, he is fluent in Cantonese and Mandarin.
