What is hip pain?

Hip pain is usually felt when the hip joint and its supporting structures are damaged or irritated.

Some injuries that can cause hip pain include:

  • Hip flexor strain
  • Trochanteric bursitis
  • Osteoarthritis in the hip
  • ITB band syndrome
  • Labral tear
  • Iliopsoas bursitis

What are hip pain symptoms?

Hip pain can feel like a deep pain within the hip joint, which may spread down the front of the thighs. It can be either a sharp pain or a dull ache and is often aggravated by hip movements. Other hip pain symptoms can include:

  • Inflammation/swelling
  • Weakness
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Muscle spasms
  • Stiffness
  • Numbness
