Hip and Groin Physiotherapy

Hip and groin pain can occur due to a range of reasons, including:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Sporting injury
  • Bursitis
  • Muscle imbalances
  • Nerve pain

These can, over time, contribute to poor loading in the feet and ankles, resulting in pain and difficulty carrying out regular day to day tasks.

How does hip and groin physiotherapy help?

Physiotherapy aims to relieve pain, protect the surrounding joints (such as the knee) and prevent further damage. If you see your physio early enough, we can provide you with advice and prescribe an appropriate exercise program to prevent or delay injury.

Hip and Groin Physiotherapy Treatment

During your initial consultation, your physio will assess your symptoms, history and health goals before prescribing an individualised treatment plan. Below are some examples of effective physiotherapy treatments for hip and groin pain:

Manual (hands-on) physiotherapy can help improve joint function and alleviate pain. Physios often use manual therapy in conjunction with massage therapy, exercise and other treatments.

Modalities and machines can be used by physiotherapists to help reduce inflammation, relieve pain and improve movement.

Electro- therapy and machines Some of these include interferential, therapeutic ultrasound and shockwave therapy.

Exercise is effective in improving strength in and around the hip and groin. This can include a combination of gym-based and aquatic physiotherapy, or even clinical Pilates.

Groin straps can be worn to improve stability and reduce pain intensity during daily activities. Make sure you discuss with your physio whether this option is right for you.

Ice or heat can be applied to the injured around to relieve pain. Your physio will advise you on whether ice or heat is appropriate based on your condition.

Balancing activity and rest is important for managing symptoms. Since not all hip and groin conditions are the same, your requirements will depend on your individual situation.
